In the vicinity of Bergendal are mainly Maroons. The Maroons of Suriname are descendants of Africans who have been brought forcibly to Suriname by slave traders. There they freed themselves from slavery and settled in the jungle. The Surinamese Maroon culture is often called the best preserved piece of Africa outside of Africa. Yet it is a culture, which has always been in motion. Wars, land robbery, natural disasters and migration have signed the Maroon history. When you visit Bergendal it is also nice to know more of the Maroon culture with one of our tours.
